APSCo Age Endorsed Recruiter

The APSCo Age Endorsed Recruiter program

Australia’s population is ageing. We’re living longer, many of us are living healthier lives, the birth rate is slowing, and an older population is creating challenges that we haven’t faced before, both here and around the world.

Our ageing population presents several issues for society in general, including:

  • Increased health care, increasing aged care and increasing pension costs.
  • A decline in the working age population
  • A consequent reduction in income tax yield and reduced productivity.

From a recruitment perspective, the biggest issue facing organisations is arguably the last socially acceptable form of prejudice in Australian workplaces – age discrimination. And the key barrier to reducing age discrimination in the recruitment process is to fix the demand side, specifically, encouraging more employers to consider hiring people aged over 50.

The recruitment industry can play a key role in reducing age discrimination and to help drive that change, APSCo and AgeInc have created the Age Inclusive Recruiter program to:

  • Raise awareness of the issues created by age discrimination;
  • Provide education for recruit consultants to help them influence their clients’ views of older candidates; and
  • Introduce a co-branded Age Inclusive Endorsed Recruiter badge to help progressive recruitment agencies to position themselves as champions of age inclusivity.

The AgeInc and APSCo Age Inclusive Recruiter Endorsement, creates a national group of recruitment agencies that support and affirm the value of employing experienced workers aged 50+ and are both committed to developing an age diverse organisation and, not only, signalling that commitment publicly, but working with their clients to encourage them to consider more candidates who are aged over 50 years.

The APSCo Endorsement is for recruiters to commit to improving work opportunities for people aged 50+ and to take the necessary action to help them flourish in a multigenerational workforce.
