AgeInc believes that age discrimination is the last socially acceptable form of prejudice in Australian employment – and we want to do something about it. Our hope is that every Australian employer becomes age inclusive and promotes an inclusive and diverse working environment.
Because age inclusivity isn’t a nice to have.
Failing to hire more workers aged 50+ will have far reaching consequences for both individuals and society as a whole, impacting economic prosperity, social well-being, and the fabric of communities. More organisation’s Embracing age diversity and inclusion is essential for creating a more equitable and sustainable future for everyone.
The importance of recruiting and critically, retaining, people aged 50+ is becoming ever more important to the future success of organisations as well as the diversity agenda. As the Australian population ages, the current 35–50-year employee pool shrinks. 35% of our population is currently over 50 with a 67% participation rate. People aged 50+ account for 6.2m workers and less than 50% work in full-time positions. Our ageing population means that more people than ever will have to overcome the challenges of ageism, and that at the same time, our economy will need to recruit more mature workers to fill both role and skills shortages.
Put simply, if employers don’t get better at hiring and keeping workers aged over 50, then there won’t be enough people in the workforce to go around.
Ageism is stereotyping, discriminating and mistreating people based solely upon age. Sign up for regular advice and guidance on how your organisation can help reduce age discrimination in your workplace.
